Presenting ... Spring Chimes (waag_159) by Fabio Keiner

 

Spring is finally here in Scotland ... the May blossom has come and gone, leaving pink and white confetti in the streets ... and the sun doesn’t set until after 9pm.

With this in mind I present the latest release from Fabio Keiner, “Spring Chimes (waag_rel159) ... a four-part ep that brings to mind the intoxicating sound of wind chimes swaying and making their music in the wind.

The short opening track, “Morning Chimes”, captures the scattered random nature of chimes ... an entrancing sound that distills the nature of chimes.

We then have “Spring Chimes I” ... a truly entrancing longform ambient track that presents a soundscape of ethereal beauty and otherworldliness where musical notes dance off on the horizon.

The penultimate track, “Storm Warning”, has a mysterious Lovecraftian air about it ... there is a sense of cyclopian vistas and being in places that have not been visited in aeons ... think Dyer and Danforth in Kadath in the Cold Waste. It is utterly intoxicating.

The last track, “Spring Chimes II”, is another longer-form piece, this time with an atmospheric feel that is very much in keeping with “Storm Warning”.

All in, I really enjoyed this ep from Fabio Keiner and hope you will too.

Presenting ... My Tribute to Jeanne (waag_rel158)

There are those among us who show what giving is. Jeanne gave of her heart, mind, and spirit. I am forever grateful.
- Allen Pitts

"My Tribute to Jeanne (waag_rel158)" is a reflective EP that allows Allen Pitts to document his feelings towards his dear friend and provide some sense of closure after her untimely passing. It is a very personal recording for Allen and one I am proud to share here on weareallghosts.

The opening track “Into The Light” is a melodic synth and piano piece ... a gentle, introspective number that delights me as a listener with its warmth.

We then move to the irresistibly titled “Jeanne's Jam” with its infectious instrumentation and catchy rhythm that had me thinking of the title to “Thirty-something” (a soundtrack I love and listen to regularly). The guitar on this piece is so wonderfully upbeat and, dare I say it, jolly ... it is a joyful recollection of Jeanne and all the good times that Allen has simply jamming away with her.

“Free” moves in another direction altogether from the joyful upbeat to a more reflective, almost sacred, synth-driven otherworldliness that gives way to melancholic piano before a rhythm section bursts in to ground the piece. You can almost sense Jeanne going ... “what’s this, Allen? I want upbeat!” ... and Allen delivers whilst still retaining a sense of his sadness in her passing. It is a longer, more complex track but one that has a sense of freedom to it ... a celebratory track for a life well lived.

The EP then ends with “Signs and Wonders” with its gentle synths and melancholic piano before more vibrant rhythms burst forth to ground the piece. This is a fitting end to the EP with its passionate playing and inventive soundscaping ... it leaves you wanting more.

Presenting ... Old Stones (waag_rel157) by Cousin Silas

“Old Stones (waag_rel157)” by Cousin Silas is an album of immense beauty that is inspired by the old stones of Scotland and the myths and legends that surround them.

The album consists of two longform tracks that have an ethereal magic about them:

The first track, “Sunrise on Clach an Trushal”, captures that liminal period between what was and what is to become ... it conveys this misty twilight otherworldliness in a manner that enthralled and captivated me when I first listened to it.

The second track, “Sunset on Tomnaverie”, whilst also capturing a period of change, is a more measured piece of ambient brilliance ... it so eloquently articulates a day that is nearly over with the anticipation of period of rest.

Within both tracks Cousin Silas has sought to bring forward sonic elements inspired by old stones: the suggestion of Celtic vocals in “Sunrise ...” and gentle strings and vocals in “Sunset ...” and does so with grace and ease ... nothing feels forced, everything is as it should be.

And that is this album in a nutshell: everything is as it should be ... especially Cousin Silas who is back at WAAG, his second home.

I am honoured to release “Old Stones (waag_rel157)” by Cousin Silas and hope you find the joy I have found in escaping the here and now for places of immense, awe-inspiring beauty.

Presenting ... Dronescape 050 (waag_drs050) by Cousin Silas

It is a bittersweet moment for today marks the release of the 50th and last dronescape from Cousin Silas.

And, as always, it is a fitting addition to his dronescape collection and the weareallghost canon.

But it is the last of the series.

We released the first one in January, 2013 ... and I have been guilty of eeeking them out, trying to make the last ... 049 was released a year ago in February, 2023.

And so, an 11-year series comes to an end ... and I am both delighted and gutted:

Delighted because Cousin Silas took an idea I proposed to him and made happen ... and that idea, to take longform ambient and make it “Silasy”, has been so well received throughout the eleven years that the series has been going. For some, the Dronescapes ARE their viewpoint of Cousin Silas’ music and that delights me because I make no secret of being a huge fan myself.

Gutted because we’ve reached the end of the road with the Dronescape series ... there was only ever going to be fifty.

But what a way to finish the series and what a series that we have been given!

Dronescape 050 is a wonderfully brooding affair ... one that feels like the soundscape to the exploration of a far-off world. It is a track alive with possibility that fills me, as the listener, with anticipation as I take each imagined step.

This is one for the imagination ... it isn’t really a track that can be passively consumed, rather it is to be enjoyed in all its otherworldly glory.

I have said it before and will say it again ... I really do hope you find enjoyment in this piece. This is because I do. From the first listen, I found this piece to be deliciously engaging ... it is one for the headphones and maybe one too many coffees.

Who knows what will come next ... Cousin Silas has hinted of something new in the skunkworks.

I cannot wait for what is to come but, for now, I am content with this and the other forty nine Dronescapes ... and marvel at the 60-plus hours of longform ambient music that Cousin Silas has produced.

Presenting ... all​|​is​|​bright_2023 (waag_COM006) by various artists

When I was dreaming out loud with Cousin Silas about the future of waag, back in November, I mentioned about curating another Christmas / Winter compilation. He loved the idea and was the first to provide a track. I asked a few others and their encouragement and their support for the idea was evident ... so I set the wheels in motion and here we are.

all|is|bright_2023 is inspired by the all|is|calm series that Brad used to curate over on his netlabel, FreeFloating, and features (for the most part) some gentle ambient music that is ideally suited for the Icelandic tradition of Jolabokaflod, or Christmas book flood, where people give each other books of Christmas Eve and spend the day reading.

We have 20 tracks featuring some old friends of WAAG like Colin Blake, Christopher Alvarado, George L Smyth, Jaime Munárriz, and everybody’s favourite cousin, Cousin Silas ... and new (to WAAG) voices too like Ali Kilpatrick, Lezet, In Vitro, Theofil Tsiolakakis aka Mean Flow all the way from Thessaloniki, Greece; and the wonderfully entitled WHΛLTHISИEY aka Fernando Cerqueira.

The majority of the tracks feature gentle ambient such as “Quiet Night” by Ambi Case, Coolambient’s “Untrodden Snow”, and an absolute beauty by Kevin Buckland entitled “031223”.

We have new music from Fabio Keiner with “Midwinter Song” and “Humbled” by Sergio Mariani, new and old friends of WAAG respectively ... along with tracks from Allen Pitts (“Moonlit Snow”) and Brian M Talgo (“Bliss”) that fit the bill perfectly.

We also have “Mimicked Notion #3” by The Next Commuter, which blew me away, if I can be honest? I hope to work more with Hans Thomas in the new year and would love to have some new music from him to present from WAAG ... that’s my Christmas wish anyway!

A few of the tracks provide some added sparkle to the compilation that may not fall within the definition of “gentle ambient” but who am I to gatekeep? Christopher Alvarado’s “Mend” is synthy gorgeousness and a long awaited return from him. Wilfried Hanrath, another old friend of WAAG, actually submitted three tracks but “Eternally” fit the bill albeit it may wake you up if you are starting to dose off ... and “The Flickering Glows Of Luminous Matter” by Jaime Munárriz is another wonderful piece of electronica that certainly got me listening when I heard it.

I shouldn’t have favourites ... and I don’t! But I will point you in the direction of “Coventry Carol Emmanuel” by Nicole Anderson & Scott Lawlor with my last mention. The combination of harp and Scott’s trademark gentle drones is exquisite ... it is the Angel on top of a beautifully dressed Christmas tree.

Presenting ... Beyond Horizon (waag_rrl016) by Fabio Keiner

Fabio Keiner is a patient man. He first broached the idea of rereleasing “Beyond Horizon” a number of months ago and, with this and that, it is only now that I can proudly present to you his wonderfully gentle and intriguing opus.

“Beyond Horizon” features six disparate tracks that somehow make a cohesive whole ... these tracks are the kind of “space music” that got me into ambient music all those years ago. The kind of gentle, unhurried ambient music that feels vast and spacious ... music that paints vivid pictures in your mind of open spaces of the cyclopean kind that Lovecraft regularly spoke of.

I hope you enjoy this piece from Fabio as much as I do ... and, with any luck, we may hear more from him in the future.

Presenting ... Advent (waag_aa003) by Allen Pitts

We've done this kind of thing before ... back in 2015, with the help of Stephen Briggs, we released music to help you celebrate the run up to Christmas Day ... and it was my intention to do the same in 2023 with the help of Allen Pitts.

We were going to release one track in each of the four Sundays in December to give you something to mediate on during the Advent time as you focussed on Christmas Day ... if that was your sort of thing.

That was until I heard the music Allen had sent me.

Advent (waag_aa003) by Allen Pitts contains four gentle ambient pieces that are intended to give the listener a sense of peace, to provide a moment of rest in what can be an otherwise busy time. When I heard them, I just knew they had to be released together, rather than weekly.

Regardless of how you celebrate this period, I hope these pieces will give you a sense of that peace.

Please take some time out of your day over the next four weeks to listen to the music Allen has prepared and consider how you can bring light, your light, to the dark corners of this world.

Any monies raised from this release will be donated to charity.

For every season in one's life there is a journey to be made. Sometimes the journey is by choice, sometimes by chance. The music that is being shared in this collection is a representation of both the chances and the choices of the last two years.

When Allen explained the concept of his latest album, I was immediately onboard ... I had a field recording that would work and shared it with him.

But then he asked me to contribute further with some spoken word ... and I was "errr ok" ... we have extensive wooded areas near my home and I envisioned walking there.

It took me about ten takes to get it right but I think it works in the context of what Allen is trying to convey ... the preparation and the movement of the journey.

I welcome this album from Allen and hope it brings you joy.

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to travel to Great Britain. The eleven days of dashing about and trying to visit the historic sites of three Countries became my "Castles and Cathedrals Tour". Upon returning to the US, I had time to think about the thousands of years of culture I was made deeply aware of.

This collection of music is inspired by thoughts of both the beginnings and enduring remnants of worship in Britannia. The places where land, sea, and sky inspired the sharing of faith. It is my hope that you find moments of peace and joy as you listen.

I'll be honest with you ... I've been harassing Allen Pitts for a while now to release an album with weareallghosts. I am a huge fan of his music, especially his collaborations with our Cousin Silas, and have been for a long time ... and felt that he needed to release an album ... he needed to get his music out into the world for everyone to hear.

"Hymns under an open sky (waag_rel155)" is an intriguing proposition ... a collection of ambient recordings that were inspired by a visit Allen made to various places and spaces in Great Britain ... these liminal spaces are associated with early Christianity with some ... Lindisfarne, Iona, Whitby ... earning their place as a title on the album.

Allen somehow manages to capture the magic of these places ... his tracks are infused with a sense of atmosphere and convey the feeling of being somewhere special ... the feeling of awe that we can all experience, whether we subscribe to a particular faith or not. And he has used this to create exceptional soundscapes that I easily found myself lost in.

That is my hope for you ... that you'll get lost in these tracks ... and you'll find something, some small part of the awe that Allen felt ... and it will bring you joy.

Presenting ... Silence Your Heart (waag_rrl015) by Brother Saturn

Drew Brady aka Brother Saturn, one of the stalwarts of weareallghosts, is back on waag with a new album entitled "Silence Your Heart".

Featuring their easily recognisable deeply layered, looped and manipulated guitar, "Silence Your Heart" is another wonderful example of how Drew continues to grow as an ambient musician.

The soundscapes on this recording are an absolute delight, they are emotive and considered, and evidently crafted with care and intent by Drew.

The inspiration for the album came from an intensely emotional period for Drew ... as they said, when we were discussing the release, sometimes you need to silence your heart and listen to your brain to get through things.

"Silence Your Heart" has been near the top of my listening rotation since Drew released it on his own Bandcamp page - brothersaturn.bandcamp.com/album/silence-your-heart - on February 3rd ... and I am proud to release it here on waag with an exclusive bonus track, "A Story Of Storied Stories", a 9-minute opus that is very much in keeping with the sound of waag.

I am grateful to Drew for entrusting this album to waag and giving us a wee exclusive ... I hope you find this album as rewarding as I have.

I am delighted to present the 49th dronescape from Cousin Silas ... another fitting addition to his dronescape collection and the weareallghost canon. 

Cousin Silas has been a true constant through the nearly eleven years waag has been in existence and it is always brilliant to receive one of his dronescapes "in the post". I get as excited now as I did back in the day when I received the first in what is a truly mammoth collection of longform audio. 

I have said it before and will say it again ... I really do hope you find solace in this piece. This is because I do. From the first listen, I found this piece to have a calming effect on my mind ... a delightfully harmonic oasis that gives me well needed respite from the busy-ness of my working day.

It's been a while.

So much has happened since the last Dronescape, back in January. WAAG has been on something of a hiatus ... it wasn't anything that was necessarily intended but, looking back, it was certainly something that was needed.

I've been doing this netlabel malarkey for just over 10 years ... and it was time for a break.

I am glad, however, to break this break with the 48th dronescape from Cousin Silas ... a musician whose music remains a constant in my life. It is, like those before it, a worthy addition to Cousin Silas' collection of Dronescapes on waag and a welcome addition to my collection on my iPhone ... a vibrant, glacial piece that speaks of the liminal spaces that can only be found when we stop moving and become still.

Presenting ... Circular Dwell (waag_rel154) by Jaime Munárriz

I have this idea of frozen time that haunts me.

This was the opening sentence when Jaime Munárriz approached me with a piece of music he had recorded. It goes without saying that I was intrigued.

He went on to say it was, in part, inspired by a long piece of music by Steve Reich, entitled Somnium, and then describe his recording process: he recorded "Circular Dwell" in one take and would add little elements of processed guitar to the piece during the recording ... he kept on going for the whole 78 minutes ... people would be around him, call at the door, ring the phone, but he kept recording, isolated ... and yet not alone.

"Circular Dwell (waag_rel154)" is a fascinating piece ... one that starts, and stops, abruptly. It is dark and unnerving and yet deeply enthralling.

I found it a compelling listen.

Presenting ... Dronescape 047 (waag_drs047) by Cousin Silas

On the second of January this year, I took an overnight coach from Glasgow to London with my youngest daughter. Miriam had booked to see the Harry Potter Studio Tour on the third of January and was intending on going with friends, not her old dad. But her friends could no longer make it and I, without really thinking about it, said I'd go with her. 

I totally loved it when I got there ... the Tour is fantastic and London is such a vibrant place to be. The coach journey, however, was something else. 

What gave me some comfort as we sped down to London (and then back up overnight from the fourth) was Cousin Silas' Dronescapes. I have a playlist of 039 to 046 on my iPhone, and I listened to them as I drifted in and out of sleep. 

Dronescape 047 (waag_drs047) is a worthy addition to Cousin Silas' collection of Dronescapes on waag and a welcome addition to my collection on my iPhone ... a vibrant, glacial piece that speaks of the liminal spaces found in the cold, quiet dawn and the dark, mysterious dusk.

Presenting ... Music For The Dark Days (waag_rel153) by EISENLAGER MARIANI

 What better way to start 2022 than with "Music For The Dark Days" ... an EP from the collaborative partnership of electronic musicians EISENLAGER and Sergio Mariani aka EISENLAGER MARIANI.

"Music For The Dark Days" features four exceptionally beautiful ambient electronic tracks that expertly convey the dark days of winter ... the cold, biting wind and incessant, uncomfortable darkness ... the beating of your heart as move slowly, struggling with deep snow ... that sound of silence as the snow carpets the world around you ... all expressed in the merging of two minds into one sound. I honestly don't know where EISENLAGER ends and Sergio Mariani begins (and vice versa) ... and that is such a good thing!

"Music For The Dark Days" is a wonderful start to the year, one that I will come back to over the weeks and months to come. I hope you will come to cherish it too.

Presenting ... "The Mist Itself Breathes (waag_rel152)" by Er Go

 

It's been a while since our last release and I wanted to ensure that we finished the year with this wonderful longform piece from er go.

It's been a tough couple of months for me personally and I can only thank Eric Goldman aka er go for his patience, having initially contacted me back in late September.

It seems almost fitting to release this album a week after the Winter Solstice ... for as we climb out of the darkness physically, we do so metaphorically too. The worst is behind us and we can look to brighter days ahead.

As for er go's latest on weareallghosts, "The Mist Itself Breathes" ... it is a wonderfully immersive longform ambient piece that reminds me of William Basinski's "The Disintegration Loops".

"The Mist Itself Breathes" doesn't require or demand your attention but it does reward your attentiveness ... it rewards you if you allow it in ... if you allow it to envelope and surround you.

Please put on some headphones and let the music in ... I certainly didn't regret it when I first listened to it.

Presenting ... Dronescape 046 (waag_drs046) by Cousin Silas

 

It's been over a year since we had the last Dronescape from Cousin Silas ... and in that time he's been very busy expanding his body-of-work over on his Bandcamp page (cousinsilas1.bandcamp.com) as well as with his "...and friends" collaborations here on weareallghosts.

I do love his longform pieces and continue to listen regularly to the Dronescapes he has released here ... as well as the Emporium drone series that he self-publishes. 

Nothing beats a continuous, unbroken stream of music for concentration and flow ... especially when working from home. I find longform audio to be very engaging and Dronescape 046 is no exception: waves of sound ... light, airy and free ... gently envelop the listener and provide a simply timeless place to be. 

Please take some time out to listen to Cousin Silas' latest Dronescape, I doubt you will regret it. I certainly haven't.

Presenting ... "Helene (waag_rel151)" by asleepinggiant

Sometimes music evokes feelings and feelings in turn evoke music. I have always tried to put as much of my feelings as possible into my music. I want to tell stories or rather make untold stories heard. 

This whole album is based around death, loss, grief and despair. While most of the tracks were made a few months ago, after the untimely passing of my mother I felt I needed to make some more music just to try and cope with the situation. This how the title track and "We are all ghosts" came into place. The latter of those tracks features a short poem by Thomas Mathie which I also included in a farewell letter to Mum. 

Helene was my mother's middle name and so I felt it was appropriate to name the album after her. It features a very reduced setup, consisting of Android apps, my electric guitar, field recordings of a nearby forest or my cat's purring as well as my air conditioning. 

I'm sure my mother wouldn't have liked my music itself but she would be quite content with me doing what I like and maybe being there for others as well.

When Ben Room approached me with a demo, I was intrigued. I had recently reconnected with Ben and was interested in hearing what he had composed. I was absolutely delighted to note the album he had sent on hit the right spot in terms of what I look for with weareallghosts and emphatically agree to release what he had submitted. 

Then tragedy struck and Ben's mother passed away. I was rather moved by the tribute Ben gave his mother and, inspired, I penned a short poem for him as a way to give my condolences. Not only did Ben read this poem at the Service of Remembrance held for his mother, he has incorporated it into the album you have in front of you, "Helene (waag_rel151)". 

We all handle death and loss and grief in different ways ... and I greatly admire Ben for channelling all these feelings into this album, especially the title track, "Helene", an engaging 22-minute longform ambient piece ... and "We are all ghosts", where Ben recites the poem I sent him accompanied by a deeply layered and discordant soundscape that is expertly overlaid with birdsong and other found sounds. 

I really hope this album speaks to you as it has done me?

Presenting ... "A Dark Time (waag_rel150)" by James Hoehl

It's been a while ...

It's been a while since the last release on waag ... and in this time James Hoehl has been busy creating a wonderfully dark and deeply atmospheric ambient album that sits effortlessly with the darker music that have come before it.

My love of atmospheric ambient music is well known and "A Dark Time" is a welcome addition to my personal rotation ... it is evocative and immersive, it entices me in with the opening track - "The Dream Stars" - and holds my attention to the closing of the fascinatingly titled and very vivid "Late 1980s Ultra Death Ray".

I am grateful to James for his faith in waag.

At the start of British Summer Time, we are grateful for the lighter nights ... we have hope in the UK for the future and, as vaccinations continue, we see light at the end of the tunnel ... we'll soon be out of this period of darkness.

And it is in this environment, that Cousin Silas brings the fifth part of his " ... and friends, volume eight", a wonderful mix of delightfully gentle ambience ("Bondservant Ballad" by Cousin Silas & Sergio Mariani or "Interplanetary Drift In Front Of Starfield" by Cousin Silas & Ian Craig); atmospheric ambient soundscapes ("The Birth Of Orpheus" by Cousin Silas & Pete Swinton, "Deep Space" by Cousin Silas & I.v. Martinez, and "Bones Left Bare" by Cousin Silas & Allen Pitts); engaging electronica ("Goodbye Planet Earth" by Cousin Silas & Brian M Talgo or "Intercontinental Guitar Tango" by Cousin Silas & Adam Steinberg); and the vibrant and quirky ("Another Black Cat In The Boatyard" by Cousin Silas & Glove Of Bones or "Jetsam" by Cousin Silas & Glenn Sogge);

I've said it before but this volume really does get better and better. 

As with the previous parts, there is just so much beauty on this album and I, for one, think our world needs this right now.
