Presenting ... 11 Tales of Space and Intrigue (waag_rel135) by Cousin Silas & Kevin Lyons

Cousin Silas and Kevin Lyons make the spookiest of sci-fi inspired ambient music and "11 Tales of Space and Intrigue (waag_rel135)" is a superb addition to their body of work.

Theirs are the sounds of abandoned space-stations and far-off moons and the imagined goings-on of the extra-terrestrial stars of loved children's TV shows ... their evocative music is the music that feeds the imagination and inspires daydreams of burning worlds and the most captivating of deserts on the Red Planet.

I, for one, am a huge fan and love nothing more than to sit back with my headphones on, basking in these soundscapes.

I am delighted to see their ongoing partnership with artist, Andreas Schwietzke, continues unabated. As I have said before, his art so effectively catches the gist of what they are saying with their music. Once more, our thanks go to Andreas for the permission to use his wonderful work.

A 320kbps version of this release will be available, for free, over on Archive with a lossless version available here on Bandcamp for ‘pay what you want’.

Presenting ... The Fortean Project - Phase Two (waag_rel131) by Cousin Silas & Kevin Lyons

I recently renewed my Audible subscription and have been intently listening to the audiobook I downloaded from the HP Lovecraft Historical Society's anthology, it boasts of being the complete works of HP Lovecraft and it is a most wonderful listen. The HPLHS have invested a considerable amount of time and effort to really make the stories shine, if shine be the right term for such sinister and otherworldly eldritch tales.

If I were to read these weird tales rather than listen to them then I would always seek out some aural accompaniment that would drown out any distraction from those around me. And top of the list of suitable soundtracks would be the further aural investigations of Silas & Lyons.

"The Fortean Project - Phase Two" is the follow-up to their well-regarded collaboration from December, 2018; and consists of a further selection of eerie, slightly ominous dark ambient tracks inspired by the Fortean Times, a British monthly magazine devoted to "anomalous phenomena".

It is a melancholic affair, one for late nights and dark rooms ... a collection of music that is felt as much as it is heard ... an album that is dedicated to the memory of a dear friend & advocate of experimental music, Candy Lozier, who recently passed away.

The Fortean Project (waag_rel122) by Cousin Silas & Kevin Lyons

Cousin Silas and Kevin Lyons do it again. With "The Fortean Project (waag_rel122)" they have created another album of dark and atmospheric soundscapes, an album that will soundtrack your wildest Cyclopean nightmares and provide aural accompaniment for your weirdest of unexplainable experiences.

The sounds presented here are deliciously dark and seriously spooky, they have a vibrancy that fans of dark ambient will totally get. I, for one, love them and have spoken before about my fondness for reading HP Lovecraft whilst listening to music of this ilk.

And it is reading that has inspired both Silas and Lyons, reading of the Fortean Times, a British monthly magazine devoted to what is called "anomalous phenomena" on their Wikipedia page. Whilst I am not a reader myself, I can testify to Cousin Silas' love of the publication: he's always talking about it and, when I visit him, he always has a couple of copies lying about. He gets his inspiration from this monthly and I get inspired by him ... and I hope you do too?

As before, my thanks goes to the wonderful waag community ... for their generous support.

A 320kbps version of this release will be available, for free, over on Archive with a lossless version available here on Bandcamp for ‘pay what you want’.

Presenting ... Leftovers (waag_rel117) by Cousin Silas | Tim Jones | Kevin Lyons

Leftovers. The tracks that make up this album were recorded during the week that Tim Jones & Kevin Lyons spent with Cousin Silas in deepest, darkest Yorkshire. That session, back in 2016, was a wonderful creative outpouring that spawned two albums celebrating Arthur Machen's influential weird fiction.

The tracks were recorded at the same time but didn't seem to fit with the theme: they were a little too out there, a bit too noisy, slightly too space for the more earthy nature of Machen's writing; and as such they were put aside ... that is until now.
These tracks do not deserve to languish on a hard drive gathering metaphorical dust ... they deserve to be heard in all their dark, mysterious, atmospheric, radiophonic best!

Radiophonic is, by far, the best description of the music presented here ... for it reminds me of the work created by the Radiophonic Workshop as an accompaniment to the BBC's best science fiction. This is the soundtrack to otherworldly adventures held on planets not previously know to Earth or her inhabitants ... the soundtrack to the dreams I had as a child after overdosing on Starblazer comics and watching Dr Who from behind the sofa.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't easy listening. It is challenging and confusing ... but it is rewarding and I, for one, have throughly enjoyed being totally immersed in these dark ambient soundscapes. Soundscapes that no one other than Silas, Jones and Lyons can and do produce.

As before, my thanks goes to Cousin Silas, Kevin Lyons & Tim Jones, and to Warren Daly … Adrian Nicholls ... Drew Miller ... and the wonderful waag community ... for their generous support.
A 320kbps version of this release will be available, for free, over on Archive with a lossless version available on Bandcamp for ‘pay what you want’.

Presenting ... "Organised Vibrations (waag_rel115)" by Kevin Lyons

I always delight in releasing Kevin Lyons' music. I have a real soft spot for his music and I'm not the only one, there are a number of others who really do appreciate his Berlin School-inspired take on ambient electronic music.

Kevin Lyons' latest release on weareallghosts, entitled "Organised Vibrations", is a wonderfully progressive collection of tracks that take me, as the listener, on multiple journeys of discovery. From the Tangerine Dream flavoured opener, "Aum", to the expansive closing track, "A Universe Made Of Glass", this is an album that transports me to the furthest of far flung places and provides the soundtrack to my most intrepid of dreams.

Kevin Lyons draws from his love of film and books, channeling his love for weird science fiction and horror in subtle ways, creating the most exquisitely suspenseful atmospheres that defy definition and surprise the listener with unexpected twists and turns or bedazzle them with their unfathomable beauty.

"Organised Vibrations" is a welcome addition to both Lyons' canon and the collective waag body-of-work.

As before, my thanks goes to Cousin Silas, Kevin Lyons & Tim Jones, and to Warren Daly … Adrian Nicholls ... Drew Miller ... and the wonderful waag community ... for their generous support.

Presenting ... The Three Imposters 2 (waag_rel112) by Cousin Silas | Tim Jones | Kevin Lyons

Beginning where the first album left off, "The Three Imposters 2" is further evidence of the creative outpouring that occurred in July 2016 when Cousin Silas, Tim Jones & Kevin Lyons got together to watch obscure Hammer Horror films, eat pizza, drink too much coffee, and discuss their shared love for Arthur Machen's influential weird fiction.

Samples of found sounds, glitchy Radiophonic loops, washes of the most languid synths, an otherworldly choir, and Silas' trademark ambient guitar all play their part to help create something very special indeed. This is weird music for the weirdest of fiction, and it works really well as an accompaniment to Machen's writing and that of other writers in the genre.

This isn't the easiest of listens at times, it can be challenging ... but through such adversity comes reward, and I found "The Three Imposters 2" a very rewarding listen, one that gives again and again. I especially enjoy the reworkings by Silas, Jones & Lyons; they are something of note that bodes well for the future as these three grow and develop further as musicians.

As before, my thanks goes to the original Three Imposters and to Warren Daly … Adrian Nicholls ... Drew Miller ... and the wonderful waag community ... for their generous support.

Presenting ... Beyond the Infinite (waag_rel107) by Cousin Silas & Kevin Lyons

I believe in the power of music to inspire and to heal.

That's a bit of a cheesy thing to say, I know, but I believe it to be true.

When I set out on the weareallghosts journey, it wasn't to make money or to strike it big. No, it was to give something back to the DIY music community that has nourished me over the years ... to bring some happiness into an unhappy world ... to light the proverbial candle to shine out in the darkness. I think I have achieved that.

So today, regardless of all the voices that say I am just not good enough ... regardless of all the closed doors ... regardless of what others think ... I can lift my head up and say: I made this happen! I took an idea and brought it into being ... and I did it with the help and support of people I am proud to call my friends.

I couldn't have started weareallghosts without the support of Cousin Silas and I wouldn't have kept going for over 5 years if it wasn't for the encouragement of Kevin Lyons. I am proud, so very proud, to call them dear friends and look forward to our annual meet-ups in deepest, darkest Yorkshire.

It is, then, with the greatest of pleasure to offer out a further instalment in their ongoing partnership: "Beyond the Infinite (waag_rel107)" is their sixth release as a duo and by far one of their best. Their atmospheric ambient music is the perfect accompaniment to the best in science or weird fiction, pairing effortlessly with the likes of H.P. Lovecraft. Delicate, open, and unsettling; their music makes the Cyclopean architecture of such stories as "In the Mountains of Madness" come alive for me, especially the illustrated version by I. N. J. Culbard, which I read while having my first listen to the submission.

Yes, there are beats. "Lost Horizons" is a prime example of Silas and Lyons' measured approach to percussion ... but this is, to me, more about the atmospherics. "Grey Steel Skies" and the title track, "Beyond the Infinite", are truly exemplary of music that is so much more than music, it is feeling ... an eerie, unsettling, weird feeling that I just soak up like a sponge. If that's your kind of thing then this is your kind of thing!

As before, my thanks goes to Cousin Silas ... Warren DalyKevin Lyons ... Adrian Nicholls ... Drew Miller ... and the wonderful waag community ... for their generous support.
A 320kbps version of this release will be available, for free, over on Archive with a lossless version available here on Bandcamp for ‘pay what you want’.

I really hope you enjoy the latest release from Cousin Silas and Kevin Lyons as much as I have.

- Thomas

PS: grateful thanks to Andreas Schwietzke for the use of another of his illustrations, it is so fitting and perfectly in tune with the music.

Presenting ... "Dancers at the End of Time (waag_rel098)" by Kevin Lyons

Kevin Lyons and I were daydreaming together, earlier today ... dreaming of opening up a space called "The End of Time" where the beer was microbrewed, the coffee was always fresh and made with v60s, and the music was decidedly ambient in nature with Cousin Silas playing live; Every night there would be a sci-fi film on and the kitchen would serve the best pizzas at any time of the day.

I guess we can dream.

I love Kevin Lyons' music ... it has a special something about it that always captures my imagination. He creates wonderfully vivid soundscapes that are so easy to be caught up in, soundscapes that engage and inspire in equal measure, soundscapes that feed the soul; Whilst Kevin plays well with others ... especially Cousin Silas and Tim Jones ... it is always a pleasure to hear what he's got to say on his own, the distillation of all his nerdy loves into 70 minutes of ambient music. We are, after all, the sum total of our influences and "Dances at the End of Time" is a wonderful summation of all that is Kevin.

As a result of the generous support of folks like Mr Lyons himself ... Cousin Silas ... Warren Daly … and the wonderful waag community ... I’m proud to be able to offer a 320kbps version of this release for free over on Archive with a lossless version available on Bandcamp for ‘pay what you want’.

I really hope you will enjoy "Dancers at the End of Time" as much as I do.

Presenting ... "The Moorcock Principle (waag_rel097)" by Cousin Silas & Kevin Lyons

I get really excited when I receive an album from Cousin Silas and Kevin Lyons. Theirs is a particularly vibrant collaboration, one that points to the very best of weird and science fiction. "The Moorcock Principle" is their fifth outing and the very name of it speaks of the very best in fantastical writing. I could be wrong but I'm sure track three -  Frank & Jerry's Final Confrontation - refers to Michael Moorcock's character, Jerry Cornelius.

This is my kind of ambient music: evocative and entertaining ... it provides the very best kind of soundtrack for reading or other similarly engaging endeavours. I lose myself in the waves of sound that are presented, the combination of Cousin Silas' ambient guitars and Kevin Lyons' electronics is, most definitely, a match made in the Multiverse.

So too is their ongoing partnership with artist, Andreas Schwietzke; his art so effectively catches the gist of what they are saying with their music. Our thanks go to Andreas, once more, for the permission to use his wonderful work.

As a result of the generous support of Cousin Silas and Warren Daly … and the wonderful waag community ... I’m proud to be able to offer a 320kbps version of this release for free over on Archive with a lossless version available on Bandcamp for ‘pay what you want’.

I really hope you will enjoy "The Moorcock Principle" as much as I do ... just make sure there are no microbes on Uranus as you do.

Presenting ... The Three Imposters (waag_rel093) by Cousin Silas | Tim Jones | Kevin Lyons

Arthur Machen, the Welsh author of the 1890s and early 20th century, is best known for his influential supernatural, fantasy and horror fiction. Machen’s most famous work - The Great God Pan - is new to me but is the source of inspiration for Cousin Silas, Tim Jones & Kevin Lyons along with the series of short stories that their latest album is named after, The Three Imposters.

According to Wikipedia, The Three Imposters incorporates several inset weird tales and culminates in a final denouement of deadly horror, connected with a secret society devoted to debauched pagan rites. The three impostors of the title are members of this society who weave a web of deception in the streets of London —relating the aforementioned weird tales in the process—as they search for a missing Roman coin.

It is a book that I yet to read but I am inspired to do so because of it’s impact on Silas, Jones & Lyons; who have taken this impact and created the most wondrous of experimental ambient music. Starting and finishing with a refrain played on a hurdy-gurdy - a sound that sends chills down my spine each and every time I hear it - The Three Imposters is as deliciously dark as the richest of chocolate, as engaging and almost as fattening.

The music featured on The Three Imposters was created during a week together earlier this year. I had the privilege of joining the trio for an overnight. The closest they got to debauchery - while I was there - was watching old horror films (one of which provided the hurdy-gurdy refrain), drinking too much coffee and eating pizza. Whilst I cannot vouch for what happened when I wasn’t there, I’m glad they were inspired by Machen in such a way as to create such a delightful selection of electronic ambience.

Thanks to the support of Cousin Silas and Warren Daly … and the wonderful waag community ... I’m proud to be able to offer a 320kbps version of this release for free over on Archive with a lossless version available on Bandcamp for ‘pay what you want’.

Enjoy.

Presenting ... The Time Dwellers (waag_rel090) by Cousin Silas & Kevin Lyons

"The Time Dwellers" is the third album from Cousin Silas & Kevin Lyons, an album of considerable beauty, one that further cements their creative partnership. This is music for the imagination, music that will inspire uniquely personal connections in each individual.

Silas & Lyons’ pairing particular form of experimental ambient music is tailor-made for listeners who love nothing more than to be fully immersed in otherworldly, expansive aural environments; and it just seems to get better and better … samples, guitars, synths and electronic manipulation are all used to create these deeply atmospheric and imaginative soundscapes; brought together in such a seamless way that the synergy is evident.

A 320kbps version of this release will be available over on Archive for free with a lossless version available on Bandcamp for ‘pay what you want’. Presenting ... 2 (waag_rel089) by Cousin Silas, Tim Jones & Kevin Lyons

It is almost exactly a year to the day that 2 - the second album from Cousin Silas, Tim Jones & Kevin Lyons - was recorded ... the accumulation of a week of creative experimentation and collaboration between three old friends. Unfortunately I was unable to attend that particular meeting of minds but was delighted with the album when it arrived in my in-box.

Underpinned by Jones’ samples and loops, 2 is a sonically adventurous and wonderfully imaginative journey into more abstract, experimental electronica … whilst Silas’ ambient guitar is present and Lyons’ attention to detail is apparent … this is something more, something rather mysterious and intriguing.

In many ways, this shouldn’t work … three people with three different, distinct styles … but it does and it does in such a way that you don’t know where the extent of the individual contributions reach. This is a collaboration in it’s truest form and it is a real pleasure to listen to.

A 320kbps version of this release will be available over on Archive for free with a lossless version available on Bandcamp for ‘pay what you want’. Presenting ... “Thirteen Things That Don’t Make Sense” (waag_rel081) by Kevin Lyons

I’ve spoken before of my love for weird fiction and the pleasure I have in pairing the writings of Lovecraft to deliciously “out there” music … with “Thirteen Things That Don’t Make Sense” is Kevin Lyons I now have a new addition to my collection.

This is Kevin Lyons’ latest solo offering on weareallghosts, an album full of the kind of atmospheric ambient electronica that Lyons excels at and I just love to consume. It isn’t an album that can be easily described other than to say the tracks featured paint wonderfully vibrant and imaginative pictures in your mind … if you allow them to.

Take “Not so constant constants” for example: Lyons use of water samples has deep diving in some forgotten cove … a fantastic mental picture or it would be, if it weren’t for my irrational fear of running open water. That said, laying aside my phobia, it is an excellent track.

A 320kbps version of this release will be available over on Archive for free with a lossless version available on Bandcamp for ‘pay what you want’ which does include ‘free’. If you decide to download this album here for free, and you can with our best wishes, then all we ask is that you please tell people about it.

Presenting ... LOOKING BACK moving forward VOL.001

LOOKING BACK moving forward VOL.001 features new music from Cousin Silas, Kevin Lyons, David Gerard, and Brother Saturn; tracks that will either appear on new releases in 2016 or are exclusive to this compilation.

As with last year’s compilation, there will be a small charge for the music featured during the month of January. All proceeds will be donated to HOSPICE UK, a charity based in the UK that supports the development of hospice care in the UK and internationally.

weareallghosts is my main side-project and something I do for the love of it. My main employment is as a Senior Business Analyst in Glasgow, Scotland; my employer actively and generously supports HOSPICE UK and doubles any donation made by her staff - by paying for this album (22p per track) we will hopefully be able to raise some money for a really great cause and give a little good back into the world.

The album will not be available on Archive although you will be able to stream it on Soundcloud.

My sincere thanks to everyone who released their music on weareallghosts in 2015 … and to Cousin Silas and Kevin Lyons for helping me choose the tracks featured.

Here’s to 2016 … we will feature some new names along with all the old favourites this year. I hope you enjoy what’s to come as much as I do!

Tx

Presenting ... Interplanetary Blues (waag_rel079) by Cousin Silas & Kevin Lyons

The collaboration of Cousin Silas and Kevin Lyons is an inspired one … fuelled by a shared love of pulp sci-fi and leftfield music. It is a partnership that I cannot get enough of.

“Interplanetary Blues (waag_rel079)” is a remarkable release: expressive, engaging and wonderfully atmospheric; it is my kind of experimental ambient electronic music. Yes … at times there are beats but they add to the overall whole of the album.

This album has become the soundtrack to my life and has accompanied me on a number of journeys both into and out of Glasgow. It just fits.

The artwork, kindly provided by Andreas Schwietzke, also fits. He his the silent party in this partnership, inspiring the chaps with his otherworldly artwork. Schwietzke is our Roger Dean and we are all grateful for that.

I am delighted to support the partnership of Cousin Silas and Kevin Lyons, and proud to release their latest album on weareallghosts. I hope you will enjoy what they have prepared as much as I do.

Presenting ... Internal Furniture (waag_rel076) by Cousin Silas | Tim Jones | Kevin Lyons

Weird fiction deserves weird music.

When I read H.P.Lovecraft, I must do so with weird music in my ears. Over the years, my go-to for the soundtrack has been Emmalee Crane. That is until now.

“Internal Furniture (waag_rel076)” is a deliciously weird collaboration between Cousin Silas, Tim Jones and Kevin Lyons; that was conceived during a long weekend together in Yorkshire.

When the cat is away, the mice will play and boy did these mice play. Fuelled by horror movies, old TV shows and pulp sci-fi novels, the lads came together in a meeting of minds to create something deeply engaging and really rather creepy.

“Internal Furniture (waag_rel076)” is the ideal soundtrack for Lovecraft’s work, a body of music that best consumed in the flickering of candlelight, late at night via a good pair of headphones … or not, if you are of a nervous disposition.

I hope you enjoy this release as much as I do. I look forward to more from this eloquent partnership.

A 320kbps version of this release will be available over on Archive for free with a lossless version available on Bandcamp for ‘pay what you want’ which does include ‘free’. Presenting ... Noises from the Edge of the Universe (waag_rel074) by Kevin Lyons

I am a big fan of longform ambient soundscapes … I am also a big fan of Kevin Lyons’ music, so you can imagine my delight when he submitted a longform piece for my consideration.

You’d think I would be sick of them after 28 dronescapes but nothing could be further from the truth … I love them! and I love the fact that Lyons was inspired by our favourite cousin to give longform a try. This creative cross-pollination makes me very happy indeed.

Clocking in at just under 70 minutes, “Noises from the edge of the universe” is everything I love about ambient music: imaginative, engaging, immersive, and ultimately satisfying. It is a piece that envelopes you and lets you forget yourself. God only knows how much I have needed this!

I really hope you enjoy Kevin Lyons’ first foray into longform as much as I have.

Presenting ... “Amazing Tales of Time and Space (waag_rel067)” by Cousin Silas and Kevin Lyons

I love visual music. I have always been drawn to ambient music that paints pictures in my mind, music that conjures up the places and spaces that I can only read about in sci-fi novels and weird fiction.

“Amazing Tales of Time and Space (waag_rel067)” by the enduring partnership of Cousin Silas and Kevin Lyons transports me to alien landscapes and disreputable townships, the kind imagined by visionaries such as Lovecraft or Aldiss; It makes for captivating listening albeit not entirely restful if one is gifted with a vivid imagination.

This is an exceptional release from two inspired musicians.

An MP3 version of this album is available for free on Archive or a lossless version available on Bandcamp for ‘pay what you want’ which does include £0 … and remember, paying supporters on Bandcamp also get unlimited mobile access to the album using the free Bandcamp listening app.

Presenting ... “Night Visions (waag_rel063)” by Kevin Lyons

Releasing Kevin Lyons’ music on weareallghosts is one of my proudest achievements with the netlabel. If ever there was someone who deserved to be heard, it is him!

He has an approach to his craft that makes my heart sing: he is wonderfully imaginative and channels the whole of his very interesting life into his innovative expression.

“Night Visions (waag_rel063)” is an utter delight, opening with one of my favourite longform pieces - “Like City Lights, Receding” - a track I would have happily released on it’s own and one that tips it’s porkpie hat to the one and only Cousin Silas, through whom Lyons and I met.

I would have happily settled with just this opener but, like the man himself, you get so much more than simply enough: 12 tracks that  are so alive, 12 tracks that are packed to the brim with the kind of experimental ambient & electronic IDM expression that I can not get enough of. These individual soundscapes could  effortlessly back the most visionary sci-fi films and I, for one, can not think of reading William Gibson without Lyons’ music in my ears. In fact, “Night Visions” is currently soundtracking my reading of “The Peripheral”, Gibson’s latest novel.

Sometimes I like to shuffle the music on my iPhone or iPod. Each and every time I do so I am surprised by a piece of music that sounds so fresh and inviting. More often than not it is Lyons’ music that catches me out in this way: he certainly does know his onions! I just wish more folk knew of his music.

I really do hope “Night Visions (waag_rel063)” catches you as it has me.

An MP3 version of this album is available for free on Archive or a lossless version available on Bandcamp for 'pay what you want' which does include £0 ... and remember, paying supporters on Bandcamp also get unlimited mobile access to the album using the free Bandcamp listening app.
