Presenting ... Old Stones (waag_rel157) by Cousin Silas

“Old Stones (waag_rel157)” by Cousin Silas is an album of immense beauty that is inspired by the old stones of Scotland and the myths and legends that surround them.

The album consists of two longform tracks that have an ethereal magic about them:

The first track, “Sunrise on Clach an Trushal”, captures that liminal period between what was and what is to become ... it conveys this misty twilight otherworldliness in a manner that enthralled and captivated me when I first listened to it.

The second track, “Sunset on Tomnaverie”, whilst also capturing a period of change, is a more measured piece of ambient brilliance ... it so eloquently articulates a day that is nearly over with the anticipation of period of rest.

Within both tracks Cousin Silas has sought to bring forward sonic elements inspired by old stones: the suggestion of Celtic vocals in “Sunrise ...” and gentle strings and vocals in “Sunset ...” and does so with grace and ease ... nothing feels forced, everything is as it should be.

And that is this album in a nutshell: everything is as it should be ... especially Cousin Silas who is back at WAAG, his second home.

I am honoured to release “Old Stones (waag_rel157)” by Cousin Silas and hope you find the joy I have found in escaping the here and now for places of immense, awe-inspiring beauty.

Presenting ... Dronescape 050 (waag_drs050) by Cousin Silas

It is a bittersweet moment for today marks the release of the 50th and last dronescape from Cousin Silas.

And, as always, it is a fitting addition to his dronescape collection and the weareallghost canon.

But it is the last of the series.

We released the first one in January, 2013 ... and I have been guilty of eeeking them out, trying to make the last ... 049 was released a year ago in February, 2023.

And so, an 11-year series comes to an end ... and I am both delighted and gutted:

Delighted because Cousin Silas took an idea I proposed to him and made happen ... and that idea, to take longform ambient and make it “Silasy”, has been so well received throughout the eleven years that the series has been going. For some, the Dronescapes ARE their viewpoint of Cousin Silas’ music and that delights me because I make no secret of being a huge fan myself.

Gutted because we’ve reached the end of the road with the Dronescape series ... there was only ever going to be fifty.

But what a way to finish the series and what a series that we have been given!

Dronescape 050 is a wonderfully brooding affair ... one that feels like the soundscape to the exploration of a far-off world. It is a track alive with possibility that fills me, as the listener, with anticipation as I take each imagined step.

This is one for the imagination ... it isn’t really a track that can be passively consumed, rather it is to be enjoyed in all its otherworldly glory.

I have said it before and will say it again ... I really do hope you find enjoyment in this piece. This is because I do. From the first listen, I found this piece to be deliciously engaging ... it is one for the headphones and maybe one too many coffees.

Who knows what will come next ... Cousin Silas has hinted of something new in the skunkworks.

I cannot wait for what is to come but, for now, I am content with this and the other forty nine Dronescapes ... and marvel at the 60-plus hours of longform ambient music that Cousin Silas has produced.

I am delighted to present the 49th dronescape from Cousin Silas ... another fitting addition to his dronescape collection and the weareallghost canon. 

Cousin Silas has been a true constant through the nearly eleven years waag has been in existence and it is always brilliant to receive one of his dronescapes "in the post". I get as excited now as I did back in the day when I received the first in what is a truly mammoth collection of longform audio. 

I have said it before and will say it again ... I really do hope you find solace in this piece. This is because I do. From the first listen, I found this piece to have a calming effect on my mind ... a delightfully harmonic oasis that gives me well needed respite from the busy-ness of my working day.

It's been a while.

So much has happened since the last Dronescape, back in January. WAAG has been on something of a hiatus ... it wasn't anything that was necessarily intended but, looking back, it was certainly something that was needed.

I've been doing this netlabel malarkey for just over 10 years ... and it was time for a break.

I am glad, however, to break this break with the 48th dronescape from Cousin Silas ... a musician whose music remains a constant in my life. It is, like those before it, a worthy addition to Cousin Silas' collection of Dronescapes on waag and a welcome addition to my collection on my iPhone ... a vibrant, glacial piece that speaks of the liminal spaces that can only be found when we stop moving and become still.

On the second of January this year, I took an overnight coach from Glasgow to London with my youngest daughter. Miriam had booked to see the Harry Potter Studio Tour on the third of January and was intending on going with friends, not her old dad. But her friends could no longer make it and I, without really thinking about it, said I'd go with her. 

I totally loved it when I got there ... the Tour is fantastic and London is such a vibrant place to be. The coach journey, however, was something else. 

What gave me some comfort as we sped down to London (and then back up overnight from the fourth) was Cousin Silas' Dronescapes. I have a playlist of 039 to 046 on my iPhone, and I listened to them as I drifted in and out of sleep. 

Dronescape 047 (waag_drs047) is a worthy addition to Cousin Silas' collection of Dronescapes on waag and a welcome addition to my collection on my iPhone ... a vibrant, glacial piece that speaks of the liminal spaces found in the cold, quiet dawn and the dark, mysterious dusk.

It's been over a year since we had the last Dronescape from Cousin Silas ... and in that time he's been very busy expanding his body-of-work over on his Bandcamp page (cousinsilas1.bandcamp.com) as well as with his "...and friends" collaborations here on weareallghosts.

I do love his longform pieces and continue to listen regularly to the Dronescapes he has released here ... as well as the Emporium drone series that he self-publishes. 

Nothing beats a continuous, unbroken stream of music for concentration and flow ... especially when working from home. I find longform audio to be very engaging and Dronescape 046 is no exception: waves of sound ... light, airy and free ... gently envelop the listener and provide a simply timeless place to be.

At the start of British Summer Time, we are grateful for the lighter nights ... we have hope in the UK for the future and, as vaccinations continue, we see light at the end of the tunnel ... we'll soon be out of this period of darkness.

And it is in this environment, that Cousin Silas brings the fifth part of his " ... and friends, volume eight", a wonderful mix of delightfully gentle ambience ("Bondservant Ballad" by Cousin Silas & Sergio Mariani or "Interplanetary Drift In Front Of Starfield" by Cousin Silas & Ian Craig); atmospheric ambient soundscapes ("The Birth Of Orpheus" by Cousin Silas & Pete Swinton, "Deep Space" by Cousin Silas & I.v. Martinez, and "Bones Left Bare" by Cousin Silas & Allen Pitts); engaging electronica ("Goodbye Planet Earth" by Cousin Silas & Brian M Talgo or "Intercontinental Guitar Tango" by Cousin Silas & Adam Steinberg); and the vibrant and quirky ("Another Black Cat In The Boatyard" by Cousin Silas & Glove Of Bones or "Jetsam" by Cousin Silas & Glenn Sogge);

I've said it before but this volume really does get better and better. 

As with the previous parts, there is just so much beauty on this album and I, for one, think our world needs this right now.

Earlier in the year, August to be exact, I had the privilege of spending a few days in Fife, Scotland; As we drove to our digs in a farmhouse near Glenrothes, we decided to stop off in the beautiful village of Culross for a picnic lunch. 

The rain that day did not stop but that didn't deter us from exploring the village. We wandered around the cobbled streets and spent some time in the Palace's Gardens, which were kindly opened by the National Trust for Scotland, the custodians of said Palace. 

Afterwards, rather than heading back (we had visited the Palace before) we explored further and ended up in these wonderfully eerie and deathly quiet back lanes: lanes with cobbles that we treacherously slick with rain and green with various forms of intentional and unintentional flora ... lanes where no car could go ... lanes where you felt in another time and place, out of step and just passing through;

It is a wonderful memory that came to me almost immediately when I played the latest Dronescape from Cousin Silas ... a piece that reminds of the peace and quiet of these lanes, so much so that it informed the artwork for the release.

Dronescape 045 is a wonderfully gentle piece: vivid and yet relaxing; it is the perfect soundscape for these anxious times that we are living in ... music to relax with ... music to be enjoyed with headphones and minimal distractions ... the perfect accompaniment for "me time" whether your 71 minutes involves of a sound-bath or a bubble-bath ... or wandering with your camera in the back lanes of a historic village.

Take time out to listen to Cousin Silas' latest Dronescape, I doubt you will regret it. I certainly haven't.

Presenting ... Cousin Silas & Friends volume 8 part 2 (waag_rel140)

 

In April, I spoke of strange days requiring strange music ... that uneasy listening is ideally for the uneasy times that we experience. 

I didn't think that, in what is now the second-half of 2020, things would remain so utterly weird: 

Whilst our shops and restaurants and cafes and pubs open up ... we have face-masks and hand-sanitiser and still cannot hug our loved ones. Our movements are tracked and whole towns have been locked back down due to a resurgence in the virus. We have people grateful for the relaxation in the rules, trying as best they can to get back to some sense of normality and we also have people protesting having to wear a mask as if looking after both yourself and your neighbour is a bad thing. 

And in response to these strange and uncertain times, Cousin Silas amassed a group of his friends to create, in collaboration and at a distance, another of his exceptional " ... and friends" albums.

Together, alone ... this group of friends has created music that speaks to this day with ambient sounds, beats, guitar and bass. I welcome more music from Cousin Silas and his friends, and thank him for this: the second part of Volume 8 ... may this become the soundtrack to your time at home.

Presenting ... "Emporium Sampler (waag_EMP001)" by Cousin Silas

One of my main motivations, when I first talked about setting up weareallghosts, was to bring all the music of Cousin Silas under one roof or, at the very least, give a home to a good, sizeable chunk of it ... I felt Silas deserved some stability.

All these years later and Cousin Silas is finally bringing all his music, well most of his music, under one roof: his own. And, in doing so, remastering then rereleasing some of his seminal works with additional bonus tracks to enjoy.

The reasons for him doing so are varied: we've lost Candy and the future of her netlabel is uncertain ... there is also the desire to refresh the work (with my other hat on, I've been involved ... creating new album covers and seeking to build a unique visual identity for him) ... and a real desire to bring all his albums back together, all bar the ones on waag.

As such, the "Emporium Sampler" is quite simply that: a sampler of the music on Cousin Silas' netlabel ... it is an introduction to his non-waag music in the off-chance that you may not have heard it before now and wish to expand your collection.

Presenting ... Dronescape 044 (waag_drs044) by Cousin Silas

From the magical to the mysterious, it amazes me how Dronescape 043 can be so magical and then the next longform piece in the Dronescape series - "Dronescape 044" from Cousin Silas - can be so eerie, weird and mysterious.

When first I listened to this piece I was immediately taken with its vastness and sense of scale... it made me think of walking in the cyclopian city on the Antarctic plateau that was visited by Professor William Dyer in Lovecraft's seminal tale, "At the Mountains of Madness".

The piece has a breathless, otherworldly nature ... it features a constant drone that is interspersed with weird "moments" that shock the senses and bring a sense of the present to the listener.

This is a piece best listened to at night ... with headphones ... and no distractions ... it will inspire the darkest of dreams.

Presenting ... Scenes from Suburbia (waag_rel136) by Cousin Silas & Candy L

For me, it is wonderfully bittersweet to release "Scenes from Suburbia (waag_rel136)" by Cousin Silas & Candy L so close to  Candy's birthday ... I'm not sure how old she would have been if she had not lost her battle against cancer and, to be honest, it doesn't matter ... what matters is that the world and our wee community of DIY ambient musicians is considerably poorer for her not being with us.

"Scenes from Suburbia (waag_rel136)" was created in collaboration between the adorably prolific Cousin Silas and Candy, who somehow managed to fit in recording her parts to their album while running a netlabel that I, for one, was equally proud and envious of. Candy's work ethic was unparalleled, as was her creative expression. The atmospheric expressions contained within this album are truly extraordinary, they are varied and engaging ... and serve to remind us how much poorer we are for not having Candy in our midst.

This album was earmarked for release on Candy's label - Studio 4632 - but wasn't released due to Candy's untimely passing. I don't think I am alone in thinking that Candy would not have wanted it to languish on the digital equivalent of a dusty shelf, Cousin Silas certainly didn't think so when he offered it to waag. I am proud to give this album a home and hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Presenting ... 11 Tales of Space and Intrigue (waag_rel135) by Cousin Silas & Kevin Lyons

Cousin Silas and Kevin Lyons make the spookiest of sci-fi inspired ambient music and "11 Tales of Space and Intrigue (waag_rel135)" is a superb addition to their body of work.

Theirs are the sounds of abandoned space-stations and far-off moons and the imagined goings-on of the extra-terrestrial stars of loved children's TV shows ... their evocative music is the music that feeds the imagination and inspires daydreams of burning worlds and the most captivating of deserts on the Red Planet.

I, for one, am a huge fan and love nothing more than to sit back with my headphones on, basking in these soundscapes.

I am delighted to see their ongoing partnership with artist, Andreas Schwietzke, continues unabated. As I have said before, his art so effectively catches the gist of what they are saying with their music. Once more, our thanks go to Andreas for the permission to use his wonderful work.

Presenting ... Dronescape 043 (waag_drs043) by Cousin Silas

What makes a Christmas song or film? Is it some explicit? Is it bells ... like the bells in "All I want for Christmas?" Or is it the subject matter ... like the lyrics to "O Holy Night"? Yes and yes ... but there is also something more, something implicit, something you attach to a piece of music or to a film you watch ... "Die Hard" isn't an explicitly Christmas movie ... but it is definitely part of so many people's traditions at Christmas that it is fundamental viewing in the Advent season, mine included.

There is something magical about Cousin Silas' latest dronescape that makes me think of Christmas and I'm not entirely sure I can explain it. There is an expansive quality about the piece: an openness and a lightness that makes me think of walking in freshly fallen snow, basking in that special morning light that we only see when the sun gently reflects on the white powder ...  there is a quietness to this moment too, a peaceful muffled stillness ... just the crunch of your feet as you slowly walk along. And yet, for all the quietness, there is a sense of grandeur too ... a sense of the awesome that I find intoxicating.

For me Dronescape 043 will be remembered as Cousin Silas' "Christmas" drone, implicit as it is, and I am so grateful for it ... for, as always, it arrives exactly when it is needed. I hope you will treasure this longform piece as much as I will.

Ho Katechon (waag_rel132) by Cousin Silas & Sergio Mariani is an album that I have been very eager to share with you... 

Ever since I heard Mariani's self-released "Secret Place", an album I absolutely adore, and then heard that Cousin Silas intended on recording a collaboration with him, I've been rather excited to hear it ... and once I heard it, I couldn't wait to share it with you.

Ho Katechon (waag_rel132) is a truly exceptional album, filled with the kind of drifting, air, expansive ambient music that I simply adore. Its long, languid parts are unbelievably gracious and restorative ... this is music for the soul, deeply relaxing and meditative.

Ho Katechon is Latin for "He who restrains" and I felt restored rather than restrained ... I felt the busyness of my life and all the negative pressure was kept aback, restrained even, as I listened, I was able to truly relax ... and I commend Cousin Silas and Sergio Mariani for that. 

This album is simply something beautiful and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have and will in the days to come.

Presenting ... The Fortean Project - Phase Two (waag_rel131) by Cousin Silas & Kevin Lyons

I recently renewed my Audible subscription and have been intently listening to the audiobook I downloaded from the HP Lovecraft Historical Society's anthology, it boasts of being the complete works of HP Lovecraft and it is a most wonderful listen. The HPLHS have invested a considerable amount of time and effort to really make the stories shine, if shine be the right term for such sinister and otherworldly eldritch tales.

If I were to read these weird tales rather than listen to them then I would always seek out some aural accompaniment that would drown out any distraction from those around me. And top of the list of suitable soundtracks would be the further aural investigations of Silas & Lyons.

"The Fortean Project - Phase Two" is the follow-up to their well-regarded collaboration from December, 2018; and consists of a further selection of eerie, slightly ominous dark ambient tracks inspired by the Fortean Times, a British monthly magazine devoted to "anomalous phenomena".

It is a melancholic affair, one for late nights and dark rooms ... a collection of music that is felt as much as it is heard ... an album that is dedicated to the memory of a dear friend & advocate of experimental music, Candy Lozier, who recently passed away.

Presenting ... Dronescape 042 (waag_drs042) by Cousin Silas

I've found myself fascinated with sleep lately, trying as I might to catch a meaningful and solid seven hours. I'm nearly there with my average over the last 28 days coming in a 6 hours and 55 minutes.

There has been a lot of emphasis on sleep, in music terms, recently too ... Max Richter's epic "Sleep" album, Hammock's "Songs for sleep" playlist on Spotify, and Sigur Ros presents Liminal Sleep ... are all music that I have listened to and gleefully consumed. I would, however, add Cousin Silas' dronescapes to this list ... especially his latest edition: Dronescape 042.

Cousin Silas' forty-second dronescape is a wonderfully relaxing affair with long, sweeping chords and an unhurried, calm countenance.

Whether you listen to this dronescape with the express purpose of catching some zzz's or not is up-to-you ... but I do know that this delightful longform piece will be something you comeback to in the days and weeks to come.

Presenting ... Twang 007 (waag_rrl014) by Cousin Silas

The seventh TWANG brings Cousin Silas' series of atmospheric ambient and experimental soundscapes, each recorded in a single take with no overdubs or edits, back into the deepest, darkest realms of space and place.

Once more featuring 14 tracks from the original release and 2 further "bonus" tracks for this release, Twang Seven is another exemplary continuation of and addition to the Twang series.

From the opening track - "The Crease in Time" - through to the final track - "Submerged" - this is another wonderful collection of the dark Ballardian soundscapes that Cousin Silas is renown for. "The Crease in Time", for example, had me thinking of the forest in "The Crystal Forest" ... it perfectly portrays the shiny, sparkling yet ominous feel of that crystallising expanse.

The sixth TWANG - "Structures" - takes Cousin Silas' series of atmospheric ambient and experimental soundscapes, each recorded in a single take with no overdubs or edits, into a more earthy, structural realm.

Featuring 14 tracks from the original release and 2 further "bonus" tracks for this release, Twang Six is another fine continuation of and addition to the Twang series.

From the opening track - "Angled" - through to the final track - "The Silent Screams Of The Screamy Things" - this is another wonderful collection of the dark sci-fi inspired ambient soundscapes that Cousin Silas is renown for ... one that that is best consumed on headphones, preferably in a darkened room.

Presenting ... Cousin Silas' forty-first dronescape (waag_drs041)

It's been a ridiculously long time since the last Dronescape ... I guess I don't want them to end and am unconsciously stretching them out so they'll last longer. These post-sixty minute longform pieces have become such an important part of my life, I just don't want the series to stop.

I know the Dronescapes have built up a bit of a following and to everyone who has or will buy them, I do promise to release the remaining pieces more often. But when you hear Cousin Silas' forty-first dronescape, you'll want me to slow do too.

Dronescape 041 is a glorious piece, resplendent in its seventy minutes. It is wonderfully textured and atmospheric, with a wide-open ambience that instantly made me think of those awe-inspiring Cyclopean vistas in Lovecraft's Mountains of Madness. There are wee snippets of melody that float into perception and then disappear, replaced with more dramatic sounds that surprise me, as the listener, and keep me on edge, expectant and wanting of more.

I don't think I have heard as varied a dronescape from Cousin Silas as I have with forty-one ... and I absolutely love it. This is definitely a piece that you'll come back to, time and again.
